The medieval saint, Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), was a German Benedictine abbess and polymath who was a mystic, composer, writer, philosopher, botanist, naturalist, and medical practitioner. Hildegard's spiritual awareness was based on the umbra viventis lucis - the reflection of the living Light.
